WUHAN: Iga Swiatek secured her place in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Thursday, defeating American lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-4.
This victory marks a significant milestone for the six-time Grand Slam champion, as it represents her 150th win at the WTA 1000 level.
Swiatek’s achievement places her among an elite group of players, becoming only the third to reach 150 wins in their first 50 main-draw appearances at WTA 1000 events, following legends Martina Hingis and Serena Williams.
“I just wanted to focus on adjusting and being brave, and in the end, I’m happy that I was,” said the seventh-seeded Swiatek, who is aiming for her 13th title at this prestigious level.
The 25-year-old Polish star’s performance in Wuhan is crucial as she seeks to bolster her chances of qualifying for the upcoming WTA Finals in Indian Wells next month.
“For sure I feel like I am playing better than at the beginning of the season, so I’m ready to push, and I’m happy to be in the quarters for sure,” she added, reflecting on her improved form.
Swiatek will face American Ann Li in the quarter-finals, who advanced by defeating Janice Tjen 6-1, 7-6(7/1). With many top seeds eliminated from the tournament, Swiatek stands as one of the few remaining top-10 players, underscoring the competitive nature of this year’s event.
