Rawalpindi Launches Drive to Clear Leh Nullah Encroachments

News Desk

RAWALPINDI: The district administration is set to demarcate over 300 kanals of land along Leh Nullah, a crucial water channel, to remove encroachments that have significantly narrowed its right of way.

This initiative comes in response to ongoing concerns about flood management in the city, particularly as the monsoon season approaches.

A senior official from the local administration emphasized the urgency of addressing these encroachments, which have been a persistent issue since the devastating floods of 2001.

The government had acquired this land to mitigate flooding risks, but unauthorized constructions along key areas such as Pirwadhai Bridge, Dhoke Dalal, Ganjmandi Bridge, and Gawalmandi Bridge have obstructed the water flow, complicating the provincial government’s annual flood management efforts.

The implications of these encroachments are significant for local residents, as they increase the risk of flooding and hinder effective disaster response measures. The district administration’s proactive stance aims to restore the water channel’s capacity and safeguard the community from potential flood damage.

Moving forward, the administration plans to initiate the demarcation process promptly, with the goal of clearing the right of way for Leh Nullah.

This effort is expected to enhance flood management strategies and ensure the safety of Rawalpindi’s residents during the upcoming monsoon season.
