Punjab to Introduce QR Codes for Students by April 2027

In a major educational overhaul, authorities in Punjab announced on Thursday that a newly revised curriculum featuring lighter textbooks integrated with QR codes will be rolled out for Montessori to grade five students by April 2027.
The initiative aims to significantly reduce the heavy physical burden of school bags on young children while steering the provincial education system away from traditional rote learning toward modern, conceptual understanding.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz granted formal approval for the updated curriculum during a high-level review meeting in Lahore, where subject frameworks for English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Urdu, and Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE) were evaluated.
According to Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (Pectaa) Chief Executive Officer Musa Ali Bukhari, the newly drafted curriculum was submitted to Cambridge International Education (CIE) for rigorous international assessment and benchmarking.
The integration of digital elements such as QR codes marks a progressive shift in Pakistan’s primary education landscape, bridging the gap between physical texts and interactive digital learning resources. Education experts note that aligning provincial curricula with globally recognized educational frameworks like CIE will enhance foundational learning outcomes, preparing students to compete on an international footing from an early age and fostering critical thinking skills.
The CIE is expected to finalize the curriculum content by December 2026, paving the way for Pectaa to commence large-scale textbook printing by January 2027.
The newly designed, lighter books will subsequently hit the market and school distributions in time for the commencement of the new academic session in April 2027, ensuring a seamless transition for millions of students across the province.
