Pakistan Moves to Tighten Social Media Regulations

Islamabad: The Ministry of Interior has decided to consult relevant stakeholders on proposals aimed at tightening regulations governing social media platforms in Pakistan, sources said.

According to sources, the proposed measures are being considered amid growing concerns over incidents involving child exploitation and obscene content on social media. A proposal to introduce a minimum age requirement for social media users is also reportedly under consideration.

Sources said the proposals include measures to curb obscene content presented under the guise of “family vlogging”. Authorities are also expected to examine the possibility of restricting or banning certain social media platforms, following measures adopted by other countries.

A meeting convened by the Ministry of Interior will bring together officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and federal and provincial police forces.

The meeting will review cases involving child exploitation and obscene content and examine social media regulatory frameworks adopted by different countries, including Australia.

Sources said final decisions on the proposed measures will be taken after consultations with the relevant stakeholders.
