Pakistan Govt Orders Comprehensive Technical Audit of Power Discos

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has ordered a comprehensive technical audit of all former Wapda distribution companies to pinpoint the exact scale, geographical concentration, and root causes of rampant power theft alongside persistent technical and commercial losses.
The decisive step was finalized during a high-level meeting of the prime minister’s special committee on Inefficiencies and Electricity Theft in Discos, convened to overhaul the country’s bleeding power distribution network.
Co-chaired by Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema and Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, the session evaluated a series of strategic proposals aimed at curbing line losses and maximizing utility recoveries.
Stakeholders from the Power Division, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, and the Pakistan Digital Authority briefed the leadership on existing vulnerabilities and potential technology-based interventions.
For Pakistan’s cash-strapped economy, the crackdown on power distribution inefficiencies is viewed as a vital prerequisite to easing the crippling circular debt that continues to suffocate the energy sector. Addressing commercial losses and stopping systematic electricity theft will not only stabilize power tariffs for compliant consumers but also restore fiscal viability to state-owned utilities, directly alleviating inflationary pressures on citizens.
As an immediate next step, the Ministry of Information Technology has been tasked with providing crucial technological assistance and facilitating the transparent execution of the technical audit.
The findings of this rigorous assessment will dictate forthcoming structural reforms and technological deployments across distribution networks nationwide.
