OGDCL Partners with PINSTECH to Assess Lithium Reserves

News Desk
ISLAMABAD: In a major step toward securing future energy resources, Pakistan’s state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has signed a landmark agreement with the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) to initiate comprehensive profiling of mineral elements, specifically targeting the detection and quantification of lithium in water from existing oil and gas wells across the country.
This strategic partnership marks a significant diversification for OGDCL as it expands its operational footprint beyond traditional hydrocarbons into minerals and renewable energy sectors. Under the bilateral agreement, PINSTECH will utilize advanced nuclear and analytical techniques to analyze brine and water samples extracted from OGDCL’s extensive network of drilled wells. This scientific profiling aims to identify commercially viable concentrations of lithium, which is globally recognized as a critical component in modern battery technology and green energy solutions.
The initiative comes at a crucial juncture as global demand for lithium surges due to the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) market and renewable energy storage systems. For Pakistan, discovering domestic lithium reserves could drastically reduce import dependency, attract substantial foreign direct investment, and position the country as a key player in the regional clean energy supply chain. Furthermore, it aligns with the national objective of diversifying the energy mix, fostering technological self-reliance, and boosting the struggling national economy.
Following the formalization of the agreement, joint technical teams from OGDCL and PINSTECH are scheduled to begin sample collection and laboratory testing immediately. The initial phase of the project will focus on high-potential wells in Sindh and Punjab provinces, with preliminary assessment reports expected to be finalized within the coming quarters to guide future extraction and commercialization strategies.
