PM Returns to Pakistan After High-Profile UNGA Visit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returned to Pakistan on Sunday after concluding a high-profile, week-long visit to the United States, where he represented the country at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.
During his address and sideline meetings in New York, the Prime Minister forcefully presented Pakistan’s stance on critical global and regional issues, including climate justice, economic challenges, and the Kashmir dispute.
During his address to the UNGA, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the devastating impacts of climate change on developing nations, reminding the global community of the catastrophic 2022 floods in Pakistan. He urged international financial institutions to reform their structures to support vulnerable economies. Additionally, on the sidelines of the assembly, the premier held crucial bilateral meetings with several world leaders, including heads of state from friendly nations, and met with the leadership of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss Pakistan’s ongoing economic stabilization program.
Foreign policy experts view this visit as a significant diplomatic milestone for Pakistan, especially as the country navigates complex geopolitical dynamics and seeks external investment to bolster its fragile economy. By raising voice for global equity and highlighting the plight of the Kashmiri people, the Prime Minister sought to reaffirm Pakistan’s traditional foreign policy priorities while simultaneously building bridges with key Western and Middle Eastern partners to secure economic commitments.
Following his return to the federal capital, Prime Minister Sharif is scheduled to chair a high-level federal cabinet meeting to brief his team on the outcomes of his diplomatic engagements. The government is expected to fast-track the implementation of bilateral agreements initiated during the US visit, particularly those focused on trade, technology transfer, and climate resilience funding.
