Karachi Bans Open-Air Waste Dumping Near Airport

KARACHI: In a decisive move to curb rising bird-strike incidents and ensure aviation safety, the administration has imposed a strict ban on night dining and open-air waste dumping around hotels and marriage halls near the Karachi airport.
Chairing a high-level session, Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi emphasized that improper disposal of organic waste and outdoor food operations in airport-adjacent zones continuously attract flocks of birds, posing an extreme hazard to aircraft landing and taking off from the Jinnah International Airport.
The restriction serves as a critical intervention to safeguard commercial flights, passengers, and costly national aviation assets from catastrophic engine failures or structural damages historically triggered by wildlife collisions in densely populated urban corridors.
The district administration has warned of strict legal action, including immediate sealing of non-compliant commercial establishments, while municipal teams have been directed to ensure round-the-clock sanitation monitoring across the designated exclusion zones.
