JI Demands Levy Withdrawal As March Halts In Sukkur

SUKKUR: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Monday called upon Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to immediately withdraw the petroleum levy to deliver essential financial relief to inflation-burdened citizens, even as his party’s anti-government protest march encountered unexplained logistical delays in Sindh.
Addressing a press conference during a pause in the cross-country demonstration, Rehman questioned a mysterious four-hour delay in the arrival of the Shalimar Express at Sukkur station.
The train was scheduled to transport the JI leadership and supporters onward to Multan following their departure from Karachi on Sunday via the Rehman Baba Express as part of a high-stakes campaign toward Islamabad.
Rehman warned that if the federal administration failed to abolish the contentious petroleum levy, the ongoing demonstrations could rapidly escalate into a decisive movement aimed at ousting the incumbent government.
He further demanded that Pakistan Railways provide a comprehensive performance report to the public, questioning whether the transit obstruction was an intentional bureaucratic hurdle.
The protest caravan is expected to resume its journey northward following negotiations and schedule readjustments, with JI leadership preparing to galvanize further public support at upcoming stops across Punjab before culminating the demonstration at the federal capital.
