Belfast: Ireland produced one of the biggest upsets in T20 International cricket on Friday, defeating India by 34 runs in the opening match of the series to record their first-ever T20I victory over the cricketing powerhouse.

The historic win gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series and marked a significant milestone in Irish cricket.

After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. Ireland struggled early, slipping to 36-3 by the end of the powerplay and 68-4 after 10 overs.

Captain and wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker then steadied the innings with a superb knock, combining with Gareth Delany in a crucial partnership that shifted the momentum.

Tucker smashed a 35-ball half-century, finishing with 56 runs, including five fours and two sixes, while Delany contributed a brisk 49 off 32 deliveries, striking three fours and three sixes.

Ireland crossed the 100-run mark in the 13th over before accelerating in the death overs to post a competitive 182-9 in their allotted 20 overs.

For India, Harshit Rana claimed three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two each.

In reply, India made a blistering start as opener Abhishek Sharma blasted 49 off just 20 balls, helping the visitors race to 50 in only 3.5 overs.

Despite reaching 68-3 at the end of the powerplay, India’s chase unraveled as Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack struck regularly through the middle overs.

India reached 100 in the 12th over but failed to build meaningful partnerships. Shivam Dube scored 25, Tilak Varma added 19 and Axar Patel made 15, while seven Indian batters failed to reach double figures.

The visitors were eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing Ireland a memorable 34-run victory.

Fast bowler Matt Hollard starred with the ball, taking 3-28 in his four overs, while spinner Matthew Humphreys also claimed three wickets, including the final dismissal that sealed the famous win.

The victory ranks among the greatest achievements in Ireland’s T20 history. Through disciplined batting, clinical bowling and composure under pressure, the hosts outplayed one of the world’s strongest white-ball sides to secure their maiden T20 International win over India.
