IMF Mission Arrives in Islamabad to Begin Fourth Review Talks
News Desk
ISLAMABAD: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad today to formally kick off negotiations for the fourth review of Pakistan’s ongoing bailout program.
The high-stakes talks, set to commence on Monday, will evaluate Islamabad’s compliance with fiscal targets, structural benchmarks, and economic reforms agreed upon under the current $7 billion Extended Fund Facility.
Economic managers from the Ministry of Finance and the State Bank of Pakistan are slated to hold extensive technical and policy-level discussions with the visiting global lender delegation.
Key agenda items include tax collection performance, energy sector reforms, state-owned enterprise restructuring, and maintaining primary surplus targets mandated under the strict loan program.
Successfully navigating this quarterly review is crucial for Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability and external financing inflows from multilateral partners.
Economists note that while recent indicators show stabilization in inflation and foreign exchange reserves, strict adherence to revenue targets remains a major hurdle for the federal administration amid persistent domestic pressures.
Following the conclusion of these policy talks, both sides are expected to issue a joint preliminary statement outlining the progress made.
If the review is successfully concluded, it will pave the way for the executive board’s approval to disburse the next tranche of financial assistance, further bolstering the country’s external buffers.
