Fawad Khan’s Aabir Likely to Release in India on Sept 26

Mumbai: Actor Fawad Khan and Bollywood star Vaani Kapoor’s much-awaited film Aabir Gulaal finally appears set for release in India later this month, after premiering worldwide on September 12 without an Indian opening.

The romantic drama, earlier titled Abir Gulaal, marks Fawad Khan’s comeback to Indian cinema after nearly eight years. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the producers are now planning to bring the film to Indian theatres on September 26.

A source close to the makers told the outlet, “The team of Indian Stories Limited (UK) has decided on September 26 for the India release. They believe the film, a simple and sweet love story, can appeal to audiences everywhere. Plus, with no major releases that week, Aabir Gulaal will enjoy a solo run.”

However, neither the filmmakers nor the lead actors have confirmed the date, leaving fans eager for an official announcement.

A Controversial Journey

The film’s road to Indian screens has been complicated by political tensions. Initially slated for release in India on May 9, 2025, Aabeer Gulaal was delayed indefinitely after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor.

Fawad Khan, while condemning the Pahalgam attack, later criticised Operation Sindoor as a “shameful attack.” His remarks drew backlash on social media, with calls for a ban on Pakistani artists.

Stars like Mahira Khan and Hania Aamir also faced online criticism, while Indian authorities restricted Pakistani actors’ social media accounts in the country.

Rising Buzz

Despite the hurdles, the film released worldwide on September 12, skipping India. Industry insiders say confidence around the Indian release grew after the India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash on September 14, with producers hoping the timing could soften resistance to the film.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi and produced by Vivek B Agrawal, Raza Namazi, and Firuzi Khan, Aabeer Gulaal features music by Amit Trivedi with lyrics by Kumaar.
