Costa Serena Turns Into Floating Village for Asian Games

Nagoya: A floating village has been established at the Port of Nagoya to accommodate athletes and officials participating in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The accommodation facility, housed aboard the 290-metre Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, arrived in Nagoya by sea and has been equipped with facilities and amenities for the athletes’ stay.
The ship is expected to accommodate around 4,000 athletes and officials, with occupants beginning to arrive at the floating village ahead of the Games.
Organisers opted not to construct a dedicated athletes’ village as part of efforts to reduce costs. Instead, several temporary accommodation arrangements have been made across the Aichi-Nagoya region.
The decision to use the cruise ship as an athletes’ residence has drawn criticism ahead of the event, although organisers say the arrangement provides an alternative to building a permanent village.
The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to officially begin on September 19.
