Washington: The Trump administration has approved a $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel that includes around 40,000 heavy bombs, according to Israeli media reports.

The weapons package includes bombs weighing approximately one tonne each and is being described as one of the largest recent US arms sales to Israel.

Israeli media reported that about half of the bombs are Mk-84 munitions, while the remainder are BLU-117 bunker-buster bombs. Both types are designed for use against heavily fortified or large targets.

Similar heavy munitions were used by Israel during its military campaign in Gaza in 2023, where extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure was reported.

The reported approval marks a shift from the Biden administration’s approach. During Joe Biden’s presidency, the US had withheld certain heavy bombs from Israel over concerns about their potential use in densely populated areas and the resulting civilian casualties.

In a statement, Dong said the Chinese military is ready to work with all parties to help safeguard regional peace and stability.

He said China would share its experience in military force development and provide appropriate support, while expanding international military cooperation through joint exercises, personnel training, equipment and technology.
