Convocation: FJWU VC Announces Two New Departments

Rawalpindi: Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) is expanding its academic portfolio with the launch of departments of Public Health and Bioinformatics, as the university seeks to align its programmes with emerging educational and professional demands.

Vice Chancellor Dr Saima Hamid announced the initiative while addressing students at the university’s 19th convocation, held at the Convention Centre in Islamabad.

The convocation saw 3,398 degrees awarded across various disciplines, including 26 PhDs, 356 MS and MPhil degrees, 688 master’s degrees and 2,332 bachelor’s degrees. A total of 109 gold and 87 silver medals were also presented to students who achieved distinction in their respective programmes.

Congratulating the graduates and their parents, Dr Hamid praised the students for their academic achievements and acknowledged the support of their families, particularly during the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

She also highlighted the university’s rapid shift towards digital learning during the pandemic, saying the transition enabled students, including those from remote areas, to continue accessing academic resources as well as financial and mental health support.

The new Public Health and Bioinformatics departments are expected to broaden opportunities for students in fields that are increasingly important to healthcare, technology and scientific research.

FJWU currently offers 67 degree programmes through 25 departments, ranging from associate and undergraduate programmes to master’s, MPhil and PhD degrees.

The university has also expanded its international profile, securing the eighth position among the Top 50 Global Universities in Crisis Management and 101st among the Top 200 universities in the World Universities with Real Impact rankings in 2021.

FJWU is among the founding institutions of the All Pakistan Women University Consortium, which aims to strengthen collaboration and promote higher education opportunities for women across Pakistan.
