Champions Cup Set to Test Pakistan’s World Cup Options

Multan: Pakistan’s domestic cricket season will begin with more than a trophy at stake as four sides featuring a blend of established internationals and emerging talent prepare to compete in the Al Batal Presents University of Lahore National Champions Cup 2026-27 from Tuesday.

The seven-match 50-over tournament at Multan Cricket Stadium has been designed as a testing ground for Pakistan’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, with the country’s leading white-ball players divided into Pakistan Greens, Gold, Whites and Blues.

The tournament will give the national selectors and coaching staff an opportunity to assess players in defined roles while identifying depth and potential backups for the World Cup squad.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan will lead the four teams, with each side comprising 11 players and three reserves.

The opening fixture will see Pakistan Greens face Pakistan Whites on Tuesday, with the match scheduled to begin at 3pm. Pakistan Blues will take on Pakistan Gold in the second game on Wednesday.

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson is also expected to closely monitor the competition. He met the coaching staff of all four teams on Sunday and discussed the national side’s preparation strategy for the 2027 World Cup.

The tournament follows a two-month white-ball camp at the National Cricket Academy, allowing players to enter the competition with enhanced fitness and greater tactical readiness.

For Shaheen, who captains Pakistan Gold, the tournament is an opportunity to examine how players perform under different match situations while building a stronger pool of options.

Saim Ayub, leading Pakistan Whites, stressed the importance of adapting to the changing demands of the 50-over format, while Sahibzada Farhan highlighted the mix of youth and experience in Pakistan Blues.

Faheem Ashraf, standing in for Shadab Khan at the trophy unveiling and press conference, said the event could also help players develop stronger communication and understanding on the field.

The tournament will also offer a strong financial incentive for the competing players, with Rs8.15 million allocated as prize money. The champions will take home Rs5 million, while the runners-up will receive Rs2.5 million.

The best individual performers will also be rewarded, with the Player of the Tournament, best batter, best bowler and best wicketkeeper each receiving Rs100,000.

The four teams have been placed under experienced coaching staff, including former Pakistan captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Ijaz Ahmed Jnr, while Iqbal Imam and Aizaz Cheema will oversee Pakistan Whites and Pakistan Blues respectively.

With seven matches scheduled over eight days, the competition will provide a concentrated look at Pakistan’s white-ball depth. For several players, strong performances in Multan could prove an important step towards earning a place in the national setup as preparations for the 2027 World Cup gather momentum.

All matches will be played at Multan Cricket Stadium and begin at 3pm. The tournament will be broadcast on PTV Sports, while Tapmad and Tamasha will stream the matches in Pakistan. The PCB YouTube channel will provide coverage outside Pakistan.
