Anthropic Launches Claude Opus 5.5 Model

WASHINGTON: Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has officially unveiled Claude Opus 5.5, its latest high-performance AI model that delivers capabilities comparable to top-tier systems while significantly reducing operational costs.
The new model arrives amid an intensifying global debate over the rapid pace of artificial intelligence development and associated safety risks, prompting calls from industry leaders for a more measured approach to deploying advanced technological capabilities.
According to the company, Claude Opus 5.5 operates at 40 per cent lower running costs than its predecessor and outscored rival OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol on a key software development benchmark while running at roughly one-third of the cost.
Priced competitively at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens—marking a 20 per cent reduction compared to Opus 5—the system is now accessible to enterprise clients across major cloud computing platforms including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
The release is notable for its emphasis on rigorous pre-deployment evaluation, having undergone external safety testing by independent research groups Frontier Design and METR.
Anthropic stated that the model incorporates advanced safeguards previously reserved exclusively for its most powerful systems. This proactive testing strategy follows cautionary remarks from Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, who earlier this month urged the global artificial intelligence community to intentionally moderate the release schedule of new capabilities to properly address escalating safety concerns.
As regulatory scrutiny intensifies globally, the successful deployment and market reception of Claude Opus 5.5 are expected to set a new benchmark for cost-efficiency and safety compliance in the artificial intelligence sector.
Industry analysts will closely monitor how competitors respond to these pricing structures and whether independent safety evaluations become a standardized prerequisite for future frontier model launches across the technology landscape.
