Delhi: Indian comedian Ali Asgar has finally opened up about why he walked away from The Kapil Sharma Show, revealing that years of playing female characters left him feeling creatively restricted and eager to explore new opportunities.

Ali, who became a household name for his hilarious portrayal of Dadi on the popular comedy show, addressed the long-standing curiosity surrounding his departure during a recent interview with actor and television host Maniesh Paul.

The comedian revealed that repeatedly being cast in female roles had gradually become monotonous. From playing mothers-in-law and nurses to portraying vegetable vendors, Ali found himself performing similar characters across different comedy shows, including Comedy Circus.

According to the actor, casting male comedians in female disguises was often the easiest option for writers. While the formula delivered laughs and helped establish his popularity, Ali eventually felt that he needed something different to demonstrate his full potential as a performer.

Explaining his frustration, the actor compared the experience to eating dal-chawal every day, saying he wanted variety rather than continuing with the same routine. He was keen to experiment with different characters, challenge himself creatively and discover new dimensions of his acting abilities.

However, Ali admitted that breaking away from these roles was not an easy choice. He explained that financial responsibilities and the need to support his family had kept him accepting the work for years.

Unlike leading stars who can negotiate their terms with producers, Ali said he did not enjoy the same leverage in the entertainment industry. He acknowledged that producers could always hire someone else, making it difficult for him to demand different roles or risk turning down available opportunities.

Despite his eventual decision to move on, Ali made it clear that he has no regrets or bitterness about his association with Kapil Sharma. He recalled performing alongside the comedian at major stage shows and award ceremonies, including prominent events such as the Miss India and Miss Universe pageants.

His portrayal of Dadi remains one of the most memorable characters of his career, earning him widespread recognition and a loyal fan following. Yet, behind the laughter and popularity, Ali was struggling with the limitations of being typecast.

Today, the actor continues to entertain audiences through corporate events and live performances, even though he is no longer regularly seen on television in his signature female avatars.

Interestingly, Ali also acknowledged that the very characters he wanted to move beyond continue to be a major reason for the love and recognition he receives from fans.

His candid revelation offers a glimpse into the challenges actors face behind the scenes, where a hugely successful screen persona can sometimes become both a career-defining asset and a creative limitation.
