Washington: The United States has reportedly urged several Gulf Arab states to remain on high alert amid preparations for a possible short but intense military campaign against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited sources familiar with the matter, the warnings were communicated through diplomatic and military channels as the United States and Israel reportedly prepared for potential large-scale airstrikes and other military operations. The proposed campaign would aim to further weaken Iran’s military and economic capabilities and pressure Tehran to return to negotiations.

The Pentagon is reportedly strengthening its military presence and defensive capabilities across the region in anticipation of a possible escalation.

Military officials cited in the report said the US military had begun transferring Patriot missile defence systems from Texas to the Gulf region. American personnel and forces have also reportedly been relocated from sensitive military installations to safer positions to reduce their exposure to potential Iranian retaliation.

Meanwhile, US forces are said to be stockpiling weapons and preparing combat aircraft and strategic bombers for possible operations. An aircraft carrier strike group, accompanied by more than 50 US naval vessels, and a Marine Expeditionary Unit are reportedly expected to deploy to the region next month.

Although President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on launching a new military campaign, sources cited in the report indicated that he was considering major strikes against Iran’s critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities after the midterm elections.

The White House, responding to questions about the reported preparations, declined to discuss sensitive military planning. It reiterated, however, that Trump retained all available options to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Speaking at an election rally in Lubbock, Texas, Trump said developments concerning Iran would become clearer within a few weeks and suggested that the military conflict would soon come to an end.

The reported preparations come amid heightened tensions following the outbreak of direct military hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran. According to the supplied account, Washington and Tel Aviv launched military operations against Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks across the region.

The confrontation also severely disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil shipments passes.

Efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement subsequently stalled. A preliminary memorandum was reportedly signed in June, but negotiations collapsed over disagreements concerning freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and other unresolved issues.

The latest reports of military deployments and preparations have renewed concerns that the region could face another major confrontation.

Any further escalation could threaten regional stability, disrupt global energy supplies and complicate diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme.
