LONDON:Dame Esther Rantzen, the trailblazing British television presenter and tireless social campaigner best known for creating Childline and presenting the BBC flagship series That’s Life!, has died at the age of 86 following a prolonged battle with lung cancer, her family confirmed on Thursday.
In a heartfelt statement, her children paid tribute to an extraordinary matriarch, describing her as a “truly magnificent woman” who championed the rights of the vulnerable and reshaped public service broadcasting across the United Kingdom.
Rantzen, who publicly disclosed her stage four lung cancer diagnosis last year, spent her final months surrounded by loved ones while maintaining her trademark candour, wit, and fierce dedication to civic advocacy.
Beyond her iconic media career spanning more than five decades, Rantzen left an indelible mark on British society through pioneering humanitarian initiatives.
She founded Childline in 1986, establishing the nation’s first confidential 24-hour helpline for abused and distressed children, which later merged with the NSPCC and answered millions of calls.
In 2013, she also launched The Silver Line, a dedicated support network aimed at combating chronic loneliness and isolation among elderly citizens across Britain.
In her later months, Dame Esther ignited a significant national debate on terminal illness legislation, actively advocating for the legalisation of assisted dying in the UK Parliament.
Broadcasters, politicians, and charity leaders across the political spectrum have joined in paying tribute to her legacy, with commemorative events and memorial services expected to be announced in the coming days as Britain reflects on the loss of one of its most transformative television icons.
