Two Police Inspectors Held Over Alleged Honour Killing Abetment

GUJRAT: The Crime Control Department (CCD) has arrested two senior police inspectors in Gujrat for allegedly abetting an honour killing by detaining a newly married woman and handing her over to her estranged family.
The detained officers, identified as Gujrat Saddar SHO Fahadur Rehman and Inspector Ijaz Ahmed, reportedly misused their authority to facilitate the fatal abduction of Zara Mujahid, who had contracted a court marriage against her family’s wishes.
According to investigators, the victim had married a man of her choice and relocated to the Islamabad and Rawalpindi region approximately nine months prior to the incident.
In an attempt to track down the couple, the woman’s family had initially registered a fabricated theft case involving Rs150,000 at the Saddar Lalamusa Police Station on January 23, 2026.
Under the supervision of the then-SHO Fahad, police traced the couple, detained them from their residence, and subsequently handed the young woman directly to her relatives, who later murdered her under the guise of honour.
This shocking collusion within law enforcement highlights deep-seated vulnerabilities in state protection mechanisms for couples exercising their legal rights to free-will marriages.
Human rights advocates have long warned that complicity among local police ranks severely undermines the rule of law, enabling perpetrators of violence against women to evade accountability under traditional pretexts.
The direct involvement of sworn law enforcement personnel in facilitating such brutal crimes signals an urgent institutional crisis within regional policing structures.
