Tens of Thousands March in Brussels Demanding Urgent Climate Action

BRUSSELS: Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through the Belgian capital on Sunday, calling for urgent action to combat climate change ahead of a significant UN summit.
The protest comes in the wake of unprecedented heatwaves across Europe, raising alarm over the severe impacts of man-made climate change on the continent.
Participants gathered at the EU headquarters, expressing frustration over the perceived inaction from political leaders.
Economist Etienne de Callatay, who joined the march, emphasized the widespread concern among citizens, stating, “The extreme heat we experienced this summer is something everyone was aware of. Politicians shouldn’t be afraid of electoral repercussions if they take courageous measures on environmental issues.”
Aurore Schreiber, representing a development cooperation NGO, echoed this sentiment, urging politicians to heed the citizens’ call for action.
The upcoming COP gathering in Antalya, Turkey, next month is expected to draw delegates from around the world.
However, optimism for substantial progress remains low, particularly following the United States’ withdrawal from key climate agreements under former President Donald Trump and a general decline in momentum across Europe.
As the climate crisis intensifies, the Brussels demonstration underscores the urgent need for political leaders to prioritize environmental policies.
Activists are hopeful that the upcoming summit will reignite global commitment to combating climate change, but skepticism persists regarding the potential for meaningful outcomes.
