Seoul Under Heat Wave Warning as Temperatures Soar

Seoul: South Korea’s capital is facing another spell of dangerous heat as authorities issued a heat wave warning for most parts of Seoul on Wednesday, urging residents to take precautions against prolonged high temperatures.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) upgraded the heat wave advisory to a warning for eastern and southwestern areas of Seoul at 11 am, marking the city’s second heat wave warning of the summer season.

The warning was issued as a nationwide heat wave continues to affect the country, with temperatures expected to remain elevated for several days. Under KMA guidelines, a heat wave warning is declared when the maximum apparent temperature is forecast to stay above 35 degrees Celsius for at least two consecutive days.

The apparent temperature in southern Seoul reached 34.8 degrees Celsius at 1 p.m., according to the weather agency.

Meteorologists attributed the ongoing heat conditions to the combined impact of the North Pacific High and the Tibetan High pressure systems. The KMA warned that the hot weather could continue until the end of next week.

In response to the rising temperatures, the Seoul metropolitan government has opened local administrative offices as cooling spaces for residents, allowing people to seek shelter from the extreme heat.

Authorities have also introduced measures to reduce heat-related risks, including restricting outdoor work between 2 pm and 5 pm at municipal construction sites. Private construction companies have been advised to follow similar safety measures.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation as South Korea remains under the impact of a prolonged heat wave.
