Peace Deal Brings Hope—But Not Certainty

Bradford: Addressing the G7 Summit, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that a peace agreement aimed at ending tensions between the United States, Iran and Israel would be formally signed in Geneva on Friday. 

He stated that Iran would never possess a nuclear weapon under the agreement and that the Strait of Hormuz will open.Trump also criticised Israel’s actions in Lebanon and described the proposed deal as fulfilling almost all of his objectives.

The agreement, which has dominated international headlines for months, appears closer than ever to completion, with Pakistan reportedly playing an important mediating role. If successful, Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts will deserve significant recognition. 

However, given Trump’s unpredictability and Israel’s reservations, the outcome remains uncertain. Israel reportedly fears that its security objectives, particularly regarding Hamas and Hezbollah, remain unresolved.

While Trump expects the next phase of negotiations to proceed on schedule, China has adopted a more cautious stance. In a reported conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that future negotiations would be more challenging and stressed that the United Nations Security Council should play a greater role.

 He described the current understanding as only the beginning of a longer process toward lasting regional peace.

However , the prospective US-Iran agreement offers hope for ending a conflict that has caused significant instability and suffering.

Diplomacy has to be the preferred path forward. Nevertheless, the durability of any agreement remains uncertain. Key concerns, including Israel’s continued operations in Lebanon and assurances against future hostilities, have yet to be fully addressed. 

Despite widespread scepticism about the reliability of commitments from all sides, the proposed accord represents a rare opportunity to reduce tensions and prevent further destruction in the Middle East. 

Let’s hope Donald Trump’s megalomaniac approach doesn’t undermine the genuine efforts to achieve a lasting peace for the region.
