Pakistan Signals Cautious Shift on US Sanctions Against Iran
ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan has indicated a cautious shift in its stance regarding the newly imposed US sanctions on Iran, asserting its commitment to adhere to “all applicable sanctions regimes” as per international and domestic law. This statement marks a departure from Islamabad’s previous focus on international law and its bilateral trade agreements with Tehran.
During a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan emphasized, “Pakistan is a responsible member of the international community and adheres, and shall continue to adhere, to all applicable sanctions regimes in accordance with international and domestic laws.” However, the spokesperson did not clarify what constitutes “applicable” sanctions, leaving ambiguity regarding the legal versus practical implications of these restrictions.
This shift is noteworthy as it contrasts with earlier statements made when the US announced its sanctions, where the then Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi had reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international law and bilateral trade with Iran. The evolving position suggests a potential recalibration of Pakistan’s foreign policy in response to international pressures.
Looking ahead, analysts suggest that this cautious approach may impact Pakistan’s economic relations with Iran and its standing in the broader geopolitical landscape. As Islamabad navigates its commitments, further clarifications from the Foreign Office are anticipated, particularly regarding future engagements with both Iran and the United States.
