PSX Declines Amid Geopolitical Tensions, High Oil Prices

KARACHI:
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) faced significant pressure on Thursday as the benchmark KSE-100 index dropped to levels not seen since before the onset of the Middle East conflict, indicating a decline in investor confidence.

According to Topline Securities Ltd, the KSE-100 index experienced a volatile session, initially opening higher and briefly surpassing the 170,000 mark. However, this early momentum was short-lived as profit-taking and widespread selling intensified, resulting in a decline of 1,332.47 points, or 0.78 percent, closing at 168,636.85. Major contributors to this downturn included Pakistan Petroleum, United Bank, Hub Power, Oil and Gas Development Company, and Fauji Fertiliser, which collectively accounted for a loss of approximately 470 points.

The persistent selling pressure across various sectors, including banks, exploration and production companies, cements, and oil marketing companies, reflects a cautious trading environment exacerbated by elevated oil prices. This situation poses a significant threat to macroeconomic stability, as the high cost of energy imports continues to burden the cost of doing business in Pakistan.

Looking ahead, market analysts are closely monitoring geopolitical developments and their potential impact on the economy. Investors are advised to remain vigilant as the situation evolves, with expectations of further market fluctuations in response to ongoing global tensions.
