Pakistan Reports Fifth Polio Case of 2023 in KP

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reported its fifth polio case of the year, involving a 17-month-old girl from the Khandar Khankhel union council in the Bannu Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The case was confirmed on Tuesday by an official from the National Emergency Operations Centre.
The official noted that four of the five polio cases reported this year have been detected in the Bannu Division, with three specifically from the Bannu district.
This alarming trend highlights the ongoing challenges faced in eradicating the virus in the region.
According to the polio eradication programme’s website, vaccination efforts have successfully reduced polio cases by 99.8% since the early 1990s, when there were an estimated 20,000 cases.
However, the persistence of the virus in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa indicates that significant work remains to be done to ensure the safety of all children.
This latest case underscores the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and vaccination initiatives across the country.
Health officials are calling for immediate action to bolster these efforts, as the risk of transmission continues to threaten public health.
