Pakistan Reports 237,216 GBV Cases in Five Years

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recorded 237,216 reported cases of gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls between 2021 and 2025, according to a five-year national analysis released by the Peace & Justice Network (PJN) Pakistan.

The report, titled Pakistan’s Five-Year National Report: Gender-Based Violence Crime Analysis 2021–2025, was prepared under PJN’s National Data for Justice & Rights Development (D4JRD) Initiative.

According to the analysis, kidnapping and abduction accounted for the largest share of reported cases, with 118,091 incidents recorded during the five-year period. The report also documented 24,129 cases of sexual violence, 20,605 domestic-violence-related crimes and 2,053 honour killings.

A total of 728 cases of workplace harassment were also reported during the period covered by the analysis.

The report examines reported GBV cases across Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting differences in patterns and trends across the country.

PJN said the findings provide an evidence base for strengthening measures related to prevention, protection, reporting mechanisms, institutional responses, accountability and access to justice.

The report also identifies geographic trends and reporting gaps, while calling attention to areas where stronger institutional and community-level responses may be required.

However, PJN cautioned that the analysis is based on reported cases and should therefore be viewed as an indicator of documented violence rather than an estimate of the overall prevalence of gender-based violence in Pakistan.

The network said the findings underscore the continuing need for improved reporting systems, stronger institutional mechanisms and effective access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence.
