Pakistan May Shut Down Three Days to Save Fuel

Islamabad: The federal government is considering a three-day weekly “smart lockdown” across Pakistan as part of measures to reduce fuel consumption amid rising petroleum prices linked to the escalating US-Iran conflict, sources said.
According to sources, the proposal calls for restrictions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with the government examining different options to limit non-essential movement during the three-day period.
Under the proposal, government offices, businesses and other commercial activities would continue as normal during the remaining four days of the week.
Authorities are currently assessing the potential impact of the proposed arrangement on government operations, commercial activities and public movement before making a final decision.
Sources said relevant ministries and institutions would be consulted as part of the review process, particularly on measures aimed at conserving fuel, reducing unnecessary travel and limiting energy consumption.
A comprehensive report containing recommendations and the possible options is expected to be submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The final decision on whether to introduce the three-day smart lockdown will be taken by the prime minister after reviewing the report and consultations with the relevant authorities.
