Pakistan Climbs Global Innovation Index, Reclaims ‘Overperformer’ Status
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has advanced to 95th place among 139 economies in the ‘Global Innovation Index 2026’ published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on Thursday. This marks a significant improvement from its previous rank of 99th in 2025, highlighting the country’s growing capabilities in innovation.
The report indicates that Pakistan has regained its status as an ‘overperformer’ for the fourth time, a designation given to economies that exceed expectations based on their level of economic development. This recognition was also awarded in 2022 and 2024, underscoring a consistent trend of innovation-driven growth.
In terms of performance metrics, Pakistan ranked 121st in innovation inputs and 72nd in innovation outputs for 2026, both of which are improvements from the previous year. The report emphasizes that innovation does not follow a linear path from income to results, suggesting that focused strengths can lead to greater innovation than anticipated.
Looking ahead, this recognition could bolster Pakistan’s international standing and attract investment in technology and innovation sectors. As the country continues to build on its strengths, stakeholders are optimistic about future advancements and the potential for further economic growth.
