North Korea Tests AI-Assisted Precision Torpedo

SEOUL: North Korea has successfully conducted a test-fire of a newly developed precision-guided underwater torpedo system integrated with artificial intelligence for target detection, state media reported on Saturday.

The test of the “Zam-2.0” super-speed torpedo marks the latest escalation in Pyongyang’s rapidly expanding military capabilities as the nuclear-armed state steps up weapons testing across maritime and land domains.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the underwater test took place on Thursday to verify technical enhancements and operational reliability.

KCNA confirmed that advanced artificial intelligence technology was directly applied to the target detection and guidance functions of the North Korea AI torpedo to maximize strike accuracy.

The announcement comes just days after Pyongyang claimed to have launched two submarine-launched cruise missiles following renewed friction with Seoul over a border explosion.

International defense analysts suggest that Pyongyang’s military advancements, particularly in automated and precision weaponry, may be accelerating due to deepening strategic cooperation with Moscow.

Reports indicate North Korea has provided troops and artillery to support Russia’s war in Ukraine in exchange for military technology transfers.

The integration of artificial intelligence into maritime strike systems represents a tactical evolution that complicates existing air and naval defense networks across the region.

The latest test is expected to trigger elevated military readiness among allied nations, with South Korea, Japan, and the United States closely tracking Pyongyang’s strategic developments.

As regional security dynamics grow increasingly volatile, emergency security consultations and enhanced joint surveillance operations along the Korean peninsula are expected in the coming days.
