Islamabad: If your Instagram account is public, your photos could now be used to generate artificial intelligence (AI) images without you ever being notified.

Meta has introduced new AI capabilities that allow users to reference public Instagram profiles when creating AI-generated images. By tagging a public account in Meta’s AI tools, users can prompt the system to generate new images based on photos available on that profile.

One of the most controversial aspects of the feature is that Instagram users whose images are used are not notified. As a result, people with public accounts may have no way of knowing that their photos have been incorporated into AI-generated content.

New privacy controls available

However, the protections are not enabled by default, meaning users must manually update their privacy settings. Even then, the restriction only applies to future AI-generated content and does not remove or affect images that have already been created.

Adding to the confusion, some Instagram users report that the new controls have not yet appeared on their accounts, suggesting the rollout is still incomplete. Until those settings become available, affected users have little control over whether their public images can be used by Meta’s AI tools.

Renewed privacy concerns

The latest changes have reignited concerns over how Meta uses user data to train and power its AI products.

The company has previously faced intense scrutiny over privacy practices. In 2019, Meta was fined a record amount by US regulators following the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal. Two years later, the company shut down its facial recognition system amid growing regulatory and public pressure over biometric data collection.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly common across Meta’s platforms, privacy advocates say users should regularly review their account settings and understand how publicly shared content may be reused by AI systems.
