India’s Oil Minister Confirms No US Pressure to Cut Russian Oil Imports
News Desk
NEW DELHI: Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Tuesday that India has not faced any pressure from the United States to reduce its imports of Russian crude oil.
Speaking at an industry event, Puri emphasized, “I never felt anything” when questioned about potential US influence on India’s oil purchasing decisions.
Puri highlighted that prior to the Ukraine war, India sourced only 0.2 percent of its oil imports from Russia.
However, this figure has significantly increased since the conflict began, as India seeks to diversify its energy sources amidst global supply chain disruptions.
He noted that oil supplies from the Middle East have been rising, allowing the region to ship out more cargoes to meet demand.
This development comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are reshaping global energy markets. India’s continued importation of Russian oil, despite Western sanctions, raises questions about its foreign policy stance and economic strategies.
The country’s reliance on Russian crude could have implications for its relations with both the US and its regional partners.
Looking ahead, the Indian government is expected to continue monitoring global oil prices and supply chains, particularly as the situation in Ukraine evolves.
Future discussions with international partners regarding energy security and trade relations are anticipated as India navigates its energy needs.
