ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government is set to establish a Cybersecurity and Social Media Awareness Council aimed at uniting various government bodies and stakeholders to enhance protection against cybercrimes.

This initiative comes in response to the increasing threats posed by rapidly evolving technologies and social media platforms.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced the plans during the Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026, organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He emphasized the urgent need for a regulatory framework to address the challenges of modern technology, stating, “Social media is evolving rapidly, making it essential to raise awareness about its responsible use and the dangers of fake news.”

The establishment of this council is expected to significantly impact citizens by fostering a safer online environment, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, who are increasingly exposed to cyberbullying.

The initiative also aims to promote digital literacy across schools, colleges, and universities, ensuring that the younger generation is equipped to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.

Looking ahead, the government plans to convene with various stakeholders to finalize the framework and operational strategies for the council. This step is crucial in building a resilient cyberspace that can adapt to the fast-paced changes in technology and social media.
