GILGIT: The documentary ‘The Last First: Winter K2’ has been released, chronicling the tragic 2021 winter expedition on K2 that claimed the lives of renowned Pakistani climber Mohammad Ali Sadpara, Iceland’s John Snorri, and Chile’s Juan Pablo Mohr Prieto.
This film captures their harrowing attempt to summit the world’s second-highest peak during winter, a feat never accomplished before.
At a press conference in Skardu on Sunday, Sajid Ali Sadpara, the son of the late climber, announced that the documentary has received international acclaim, including recognition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
He revealed that it became available for streaming on Apple TV starting October 2, allowing a global audience to engage with this poignant narrative.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev, the documentary delves into one of the most perilous seasons in K2’s history, exploring not only the climbers’ ambitions but also the socio-economic factors influencing modern mountaineering.
The Sundance Film Festival described the film as a profound exploration that transcends mere adventure, focusing on the human stories behind the climb.
As the documentary gains traction, it is expected to spark renewed interest in mountaineering in Pakistan and highlight the challenges faced by climbers.
Future screenings and discussions are anticipated, potentially leading to increased tourism in the region and a deeper appreciation for the risks involved in high-altitude climbing.
