London: British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has formally announced his resignation, marking a significant development in UK politics.

Speaking to the media, Starmer said he had informed the British monarch of his decision to step down earlier in the day.

According to British media reports, the Prime Minister had been facing growing pressure from within his own Labour Party for some time, ultimately prompting his decision to resign.

In his farewell address, Starmer defended his government’s record over the past two years and reflected on the challenges facing the country.

“When I took office two years ago, I was deeply committed to serving the nation, and throughout this period, the welfare and prosperity of the British people remained my highest priority,” he said.

Starmer acknowledged the difficulties he faced during his tenure, adding: “I was repeatedly told by members of my own party that our political movement had weakened, but despite those challenges, we strengthened the country’s economy and financial system within two years.”

He emphasized that meaningful national change does not happen overnight and requires time and persistence.

The outgoing Prime Minister also highlighted his government’s efforts to strengthen Britain’s relationships with allies and friendly nations. He pledged his full support and cooperation to his successor.

Following Starmer’s resignation, the process of selecting a new Prime Minister has begun.

According to a report by The Guardian, Andy Burnham has emerged as the leading contender for the position, reportedly enjoying the backing of around 300 Members of Parliament. His chances of becoming the next Prime Minister are therefore considered strong.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph reported that if Burnham succeeds Starmer, current Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood could retain her position in the new administration.

The report added that Mahmood is seeking major reforms to the UK’s immigration system and favors stricter measures to curb illegal immigration.

British media suggest that a new government could adopt tougher citizenship and immigration policies. However, final decisions on these matters will depend on the outcome of the leadership contest and the formation of a new government.
