US-Iran Conflict Escalates as More Countries Are Drawn In

Washington/Tehran: The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a more dangerous phase after Washington launched fresh strikes inside Iran, while attacks and counterattacks spread across several countries in the region.
The US Central Command said American forces began the latest strikes on Iran on Wednesday evening, describing the operation as a response to recent attacks targeting US military personnel in the Middle East.
The escalation came as the conflict moved beyond its main battle zones, involving Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and other regional players. A drone strike was reported on a US-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta, while US and Saudi forces carried out strikes against Iran-aligned groups in eastern Iraq.
Egyptian authorities confirmed a fire at the port but did not immediately confirm the cause of the incident.
The widening hostilities have increased concerns that more countries could be pulled into the conflict. The situation intensified after Yemen’s Houthi movement announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, further raising tensions around key shipping routes.
US President Donald Trump said Washington would respond strongly after Iran launched attacks against US positions in the region, while also maintaining that diplomatic efforts for a potential agreement with Tehran would continue.
Iran acknowledged carrying out missile attacks targeting US forces in Jordan and claimed strikes against vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
The latest military actions have also affected global energy markets. Oil prices surged on Wednesday, with Brent crude rising more than 8% and moving above $90 per barrel amid fears of disruptions in regional oil supplies.
Iraq Caught Between Rival Powers
The conflict has placed Iraq in a difficult position as Baghdad attempts to maintain relations with both Washington and Tehran.
US and Saudi strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq reportedly killed dozens of fighters, triggering anger among supporters of the targeted groups. Crowds gathered during funeral processions, with some chanting anti-American slogans.
Iraqi officials condemned the attacks as a violation of national sovereignty while also calling for armed groups to stop actions that could drag the country deeper into regional conflict.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s office urged all sides to avoid further escalation and said Iraq should not become a battlefield for outside powers.
Growing Pressure on US Forces
The latest developments come as US officials warn of the challenges involved in maintaining prolonged military operations against Iran.
Analysts have raised concerns over the availability of advanced air defense systems and missile interceptors if the conflict continues to expand.
Iran has denied directing attacks from Iraqi territory, while Iranian state media reported that several Revolutionary Guard advisers were killed in strikes on Iraq.
The confrontation has also increased risks around the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran says it has tightened control and where any disruption could have major consequences for global energy markets.
With fighting now spreading across multiple fronts, international observers warn that continued escalation could transform the conflict into a broader regional war involving more countries.
