UN Mission Links US Forces to Alleged War Crimes in Iran

New York: A United Nations investigative mission has accused US forces of carrying out attacks in Iran that may amount to war crimes, according to a report concerning the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

The UN fact-finding mission said it had found credible evidence linking US forces to attacks on the Shajara Tayyiba Primary School in Minab and a sports centre in Lamerd in February.

According to the report, the Minab school was a clearly identifiable civilian facility, with no evidence that it was being used for military purposes. The mission said US forces launched the strike based on intelligence indicating that an Iranian military commander was present at the site, but the information was not sufficiently verified before the attack.

The mission concluded that the strike on the school violated international humanitarian law and constituted a war crime.

The investigators also examined a US strike on a sports centre in Lamerd, which reportedly damaged nearby residential buildings and a school and caused civilian casualties. The mission described the attack as indiscriminate and said it constituted a war crime.

US Central Command has previously denied responsibility for the Lamerd attack.

The report is due to be presented at an upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council and examines alleged actions by both the United States and Iran.

The UN’s public records include separate communications raising concerns about US military strikes and alleged impacts on civilian-related infrastructure in Iran.
