UK Spy Chief Warns of Escalating Threats from Iran and Russia

News Desk

LONDON: The UK’s domestic spy chief, Ken McCallum, has raised alarms over escalating threats from Iran and Russia, highlighting a significant uptick in hybrid warfare tactics aimed at destabilizing the UK and its allies.

In his annual address on Tuesday, McCallum warned that Iran is intensifying efforts to target military installations in Britain, while Russia is ramping up its hybrid warfare strategies against Ukraine’s supporters.

McCallum noted that state-sponsored threats have quadrupled in the past decade, prompting MI5 to allocate more resources to counter these dangers than during the Cold War.

He specifically referenced a recent plot against RAF Fairford, an airbase utilized by US bombers for operations against Iran, which British Prime Minister Andy Burnham deemed “highly likely” to involve Tehran.

This incident has heightened security concerns and led to the withdrawal of US aircraft from the base.

In response to these allegations, Iranian officials have categorically denied any involvement in the Fairford incident or other purported malign activities in the UK.

The Iranian government has faced accusations for years regarding its involvement in plots against dissidents and threats to Israeli and Jewish targets within Britain.

Looking ahead, McCallum emphasized the need for increased vigilance and collaboration among international partners to address these multifaceted threats.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, further investigations and security measures are expected to be implemented to safeguard national interests.
