Uganda’s King Oyo Iguru Rukidi IV Dies at 34

Kampala: King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Toro Kingdom, who gained global recognition after ascending the throne at the age of three, has died aged 34.

The monarch died at around 10 pm on Thursday, August 27, according to the Prime Minister of the Toro Kingdom. He had reportedly been undergoing medical treatment in the United States. Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of his death.

Rukidi IV became king on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father. His accession as a three-year-old made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time and brought international attention to Uganda’s traditional royal institutions.

He went on to spend nearly three decades as the ceremonial head of the Toro Kingdom, one of Uganda’s historic traditional kingdoms. While such monarchs do not hold executive political authority, they serve as important symbols of cultural heritage, identity and tradition.

The king’s death has triggered mourning across the Toro Kingdom and Uganda. The kingdom’s Prime Minister described his passing as an irreparable loss for the royal family, the people of Toro and the country.

Rukidi IV’s reign began under extraordinary circumstances. Installed while still a young child after his father’s death, he later grew into a prominent figure within the kingdom and gradually took on a more active public role as he reached adulthood.

His nearly 29-year reign also made him one of the longest-serving traditional monarchs in Uganda’s modern era.

Although details surrounding his final illness remain undisclosed, reports indicate that he had travelled to the United States for medical treatment before his death.

The Toro Kingdom is now expected to begin mourning and succession arrangements following the death of a monarch whose extraordinary journey began with his becoming king at just three years old.
