World’s First Human Trial Begins for New Ebola Vaccine

Islamabad: A new experimental vaccine designed to fight the Ebola virus has entered its first human trial, marking a significant step in global efforts to prevent future outbreaks of the deadly disease.
The first dose of the vaccine was administered to 37-year-old UK volunteer Ed Hunt, becoming the first person to participate in the trial of the vaccine developed by researchers at the University of Oxford.
The vaccine was created in just eight weeks, using the same underlying technology platform that was used in the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
Immune response under examination
The initial phase of the trial will involve 50 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 55. Researchers will closely monitor participants to assess whether the vaccine is safe and how effectively it triggers an immune response against the Ebola virus.
Scientists have clarified that none of the volunteers will be exposed to the Ebola virus during the trial. Instead, the study will focus on evaluating the vaccine’s safety and its ability to build protection against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, one of the virus types responsible for outbreaks.
Volunteer joins research after Ebola outbreak fears
The first participant, Ed Hunt, said he decided to join the trial after witnessing reports of the devastating impact of Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He said taking part in the research was an opportunity to contribute to efforts aimed at protecting communities from future health crises.
Professor Teresa Lamb, who leads the Oxford vaccine team, said the rapid development of the vaccine was possible because of decades of scientific research and advances in vaccine technology.
She explained that the team was able to move quickly because researchers had already built extensive knowledge and platforms that could be adapted for new threats.
Next phase planned in Africa
According to the Oxford research team, additional trials are expected to begin soon in Uganda. Researchers will later evaluate the vaccine on a larger scale, including studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to determine its effectiveness in regions where Ebola outbreaks have occurred.
Experts say several vaccines targeting the Bundibugyo strain are currently under research, but this is the first candidate to reach human testing, making the trial a potential milestone in the fight against Ebola.
