Displaced Palestinians in the war-torn enclave are increasingly forced to risk their lives by sheltering inside severely damaged and structurally compromised apartment blocks amid a complete standstill in reconstruction efforts.
Nearly three years of relentless military offensives have decimated residential infrastructure across the territory, leaving thousands of families with no alternative shelter as winter approaches and humanitarian aid remains heavily restricted.
In Gaza City, residents like 47-year-old Heba Arafat navigate living spaces tilted at steep angles after Israeli airstrikes compromised the foundational integrity of their multi-story buildings.
“We were forced to live here because we had nowhere else to go. All of our homes were destroyed, our land was razed and we have nothing left,” Arafat stated, capturing the grim reality faced by countless survivors who must choose between sleeping in the open or under roofs on the verge of total collapse.
This widespread habitation of structurally unsafe high-rises poses severe ongoing humanitarian and public safety risks, compounding the physical and psychological toll on an already traumatized civilian population.
Aid agencies and human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that the absence of building materials, heavy machinery, and international oversight continues to stall any meaningful rebuilding of the coastal strip, leaving communities vulnerable to secondary disasters from structural failures.
