SC Urges Govt to Model Good Governance as Largest Employer

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) emphasized on Wednesday that the government, as the largest public employer, must exemplify good governance through clear policies and effective implementation of rules.

This statement came during the court’s decision to restore the promotion of Muhammad Shafiq, a former elementary school teacher, who had been unjustly denied his advancement to assistant education officer.

Justice Ayesha Malik, who authored the six-page judgment, highlighted the detrimental effects of ambiguous promotional tracks within public service.

She noted that such uncertainty not only hampers institutional governance but also adversely affects employees who are left to navigate a convoluted system for entitlements that should be clearly defined.

The ruling underscores the broader implications for public sector employees, who often face prolonged struggles due to unclear regulations.

This case serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and accountability within government structures, which is essential for fostering trust among citizens and ensuring efficient public service delivery.

Looking ahead, the government is urged to reassess its policies and establish coherent promotional pathways to prevent similar grievances in the future.

This case may prompt further scrutiny of public employment practices and could lead to reforms aimed at enhancing governance standards across the board.
