Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s air defence systems have intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched towards the capital, Riyadh, by Yemen’s Houthi group, averting a potential attack.

Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition, confirmed on Thursday that both missiles were successfully intercepted before reaching their intended targets.

Ahead of the potential attack, Saudi Civil Defence had issued an emergency alert through the National Early Warning Platform, covering Riyadh, the central region of Al-Kharj and the southern city of Najran.

However, authorities announced shortly afterwards that the immediate threat had passed and the emergency situation had ended. Residents were advised to continue following official safety instructions.

The Civil Defence also urged the public to avoid unnecessary gatherings and refrain from recording or sharing videos of missile attacks and air defence operations.

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone attacks by Houthi rebels amid the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Yemen.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia formed a military coalition to support Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthi movement, which has controlled several parts of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, since 2014.
