Nearly Total Lunar Eclipse Set for Aug 27-28

Skywatchers around the world are preparing for a rare celestial spectacle as a deep partial lunar eclipse approaches on Aug. 27-28, with almost the entire Moon expected to pass through Earth’s darkest shadow.

At the peak of the eclipse, about 96.2% of the Moon’s surface will enter the Earth’s umbra, the central and darkest part of its shadow. Although a small portion of the lunar disk will remain outside the umbra and brightly illuminated, most of the Moon could take on a striking reddish or rusty colour.

The event will be particularly notable because it will be the deepest partial lunar eclipse visible anywhere on Earth until Dec. 31, 2028, making it one of the most significant lunar events in the coming years.

The eclipse will be visible from parts of North and South America, Europe, Africa and western Asia, depending on local weather and the timing of the event.

Observers in North America will have an opportunity to watch the eclipse on the evening of Aug. 27, while parts of western Europe will see it during the early hours of Aug. 28.

Viewing conditions will vary by location. Skywatchers in the Americas are expected to have some of the most favourable opportunities to observe the event. In Europe, viewers will need a clear view toward the western horizon before sunrise as the eclipse approaches its maximum.

Unlike a total lunar eclipse, the Moon will not disappear completely into Earth’s shadow. Instead, a narrow section will remain directly illuminated by sunlight, creating a dramatic contrast between the bright lunar surface and the darker, reddish portion.

No special equipment is required to view a lunar eclipse safely. Anyone with a clear view of the night sky can observe the event with the naked eye, while binoculars or a telescope can provide a closer look at the changing colours and shadow across the lunar surface.

With only a week remaining before the event, astronomers and skywatchers are encouraging observers to check local timings and weather forecasts in advance so they do not miss one of the deepest partial lunar eclipses of the decade.
