NEW DELHI: The mysterious disappearance of domestic chickens from a rural farm in India’s southern state of Kerala has finally been solved following the capture of a giant python.
According to Indian media reports, residents of Thootakam village in the Malappuram district were baffled for weeks as poultry numbers steadily dwindled without a trace, prompting growing concern among local farmers who rely on backyard livestock for their livelihoods.
The breakthrough came when the owner of the coop, identified as Sithalavi, discovered the massive reptile slithering inside the enclosure.
Wildlife authorities and local handlers were immediately summoned to the scene to manage the tense situation.
The colossal snake, which had apparently made the farm’s poultry coop its regular feeding ground, was safely secured and extracted by trained personnel after a careful operation that drew scores of anxious villagers.
Human-wildlife conflicts of this nature underscore the increasing pressure on natural habitats as agricultural expansions encroach upon forested areas in southern India.
While incidents involving pythons are relatively common in rural Kerala during seasonal shifts, the heavy livestock losses inflicted upon small-scale farmers highlight the vulnerability of rural households to local fauna.

Following its capture, forest department officials confirmed that the python would be relocated to a secure, dense forest reserve far from human settlements.
