Media Body Rejects Restrictions on Journalists’ Access

Islamabad: The Digital Media Alliance of Pakistan (DigiMAP) has called on the federal government to reconsider a notification imposing movement restrictions on foreign journalists and Pakistani journalists working with international media organisations.

In a statement, DigiMAP officials said the new policy could affect independent reporting and limit journalists’ ability to cover developments from different parts of the country.

DigiMAP President Sabookh Syed and Secretary General Adnan Amir said restricting journalists’ access to various regions without prior approval could create hurdles for professional reporting and impact the flow of information.

The organisation said the restrictions apply not only to foreign correspondents but also to Pakistani journalists associated with international media outlets, potentially affecting their ability to perform their duties.

“Journalists cannot effectively report on important events if they are unable to access the areas where those events occur,” DigiMAP said, warning that reduced media access could weaken transparency and public confidence.

The media body urged the government to engage with journalist organisations before implementing policies that affect press operations. It stressed that facilitating responsible journalism would help strengthen Pakistan’s democratic image and international standing.

DigiMAP also expressed concern that the restrictions could have professional and financial consequences for Pakistani journalists working with global media organisations.

The organisation called for the withdrawal of the notification and said it would consult media stakeholders and explore legal and democratic avenues if the restrictions remained in place.

DigiMAP reiterated that open access to information and freedom of expression are essential components of a democratic society.
