KP CMAfridi Calls for Governor’s Impeachment Amid Tensions

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has demanded legislation to impeach Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, accusing him of unconstitutional actions that threaten the province’s governance.

Afridi’s remarks came during a video address on Wednesday, where he criticized Kundi’s recent meeting with provincial officials, asserting that such actions undermine the democratic process.

In his address, Afridi emphasized that while a prime minister and chief minister can be removed through a vote of no confidence, the same should apply to the governor.

He stated, “If there is no law, the KP Assembly will legislate [for impeachment of the governor] and nobody will be allowed to derail democracy.” He reiterated his commitment to uphold the Constitution, despite provocations from the governor.

The chief minister’s comments reflect growing tensions between the provincial government and the central authority, particularly regarding counterterrorism strategies.

Afridi criticized the federal government’s approach, claiming it has failed to restore peace in the region, and expressed confidence that his administration could achieve stability within 100 days.

Looking ahead, Afridi plans to announce a future strategy during a rally in Swabi, where he is expected to gather support for his administration’s initiatives.

Meanwhile, Kundi’s spokesperson indicated that the imposition of governor’s rule or emergency measures might be considered to “save KP,” further escalating the political standoff.
