Gwadar Artist Turns Sand Into Stunning Portraits
Zareef Baloch
Gwadar: On the beaches of Gwadar, where the tides quickly erase every mark left on the sand, a young artist is creating striking works of art that continue to captivate audiences long after they disappear.
Using nothing more than a wooden stick, Sachan Baloch transforms the shoreline into a giant canvas, crafting detailed portraits of internationally renowned personalities.
His subjects range from football stars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal to cricket legend Shahid Afridi, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, and prominent poets and artists from Balochistan.
Despite the temporary nature of his creations, Baloch’s artwork has gained widespread recognition through social media, where photographs and videos of his sand art have attracted viewers from around the world.
Remarkably, the young artist is entirely self-taught. Without formal training, institutional support or government patronage, he developed his skills through years of dedication, practice and perseverance.
Baloch says his mission is to showcase the positive, vibrant image of Gwadar through his art. For him, the sand serves as a medium of expression, while passion, creativity and hard work are the true foundations of his craft.
Although each artwork is eventually washed away by the sea, it is preserved through photographs before the waves reclaim the beach. His work stands as a testament to how talent, determination and imagination can overcome limited resources, transforming a local artist into a cultural ambassador for both Gwadar and Pakistan.
