France Imposes Curfews Amid Escalating Unrest
News Desk
PARIS: France has announced partial curfews in Paris and several other cities following violent demonstrations over soaring prices that erupted over the weekend.
The unrest has escalated into some of the worst street violence seen in recent years, prompting the government to take immediate action.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu indicated that a state of emergency could be on the table, as the interior minister reported that police had “lost control” during the protests. Tourists in Paris experienced disruptions on Monday, with the Louvre Museum closing its doors due to a small group of student protesters.
The government faces criticism for its failure to anticipate and adequately respond to the violence, as officials work to restore order and quell public discontent.
With presidential elections looming in six months, the unrest poses significant challenges for President Emmanuel Macron’s administration, which is already under scrutiny.
Authorities have implemented curfews from Monday evening to Tuesday morning in cities including Paris, Lille, and Lyon, aimed at protecting businesses and public safety.
In Paris, a curfew is set from 11 PM local time, while demonstrations are banned from 8 PM. Organizers have called for further protests next Saturday, indicating that the unrest may continue.
